PERSUASION
What
other skills do peace activists need besides the ability to
remain calm?
We need training in
how to be persuasive and in understanding other people’s
worldviews, because if you attack someone’s worldview, they
are likely to react as if you are attacking them physically.
It’s part of who they are…The difference between
manipulation and persuasion is that manipulation uses fear,
which clouds the mind. It’s difficult to think clearly when
you’re afraid. Persuasion appeals to people’s reason,
understanding, compassion, and conscience. If I’m trying to
persuade you, I want you to be calm, rational. I want to give
you all the evidence so that you can make the right decision.

PHILOSOPHY
Philosophy is like
trying to open a safe with a combination lock: each little
adjustment of the dials seems to achieve nothing, only when
everything is in place does the door open.
