SKIN

The skin remains an organ of both love and sustenance. The caresses we received as infants and continue to seek in more mature forms later may help us survive. (More recently the French psychoanalyst Didier Anzieu has written about the “skin ego” [le moi-peau] and the importance of being caressed, calling physical affection an essential reinforcement of self.)
