It is very important for families [bringing a child home from
an orphanage] to absolutely and unequivocally not
overstimulate the child. Your child's room should be
relatively stripped of stimulation, colors, sights, sound,
toys and, primarily, food. Remember, even though this seems
cruel to you and me, it is all the child knows and it is what
feels familiar...Do not take the child to department stores,
shopping centers, grocery stores or, worst of all, amusement
parks such as Disney World, where children can become
completely disorganized and out of control.
