Q: Anything else happen in London last week besides the UK opening of
Gods and Monsters?
Bill Condon: Monica Lewinsky was there.
Q: What?
Bill Condon: Ian [McKellen] met her at the Vanity Fair party Oscar night. She said she was
going to be in London doing a book signing, so he invited her to be his date. The amazing thing
about, I thought, first of all, is that she is kind of a fag hag, a little bit. Maybe it was just the
event, but every time you turned around, at that party, she was just surrounded by six gay
guys. And she had lots of good jokes. She had a drink in her hand at this little party before the
movie started, and they called everyone into the theater. One of her handlers, her PR people,
said, "Can Monica bring her drink in?" And she said, "Of course I can. I've got immunity!" and
then she said that having Ian as her date was "very familiar" to her, that she was "used to it.
Just another unavailable man."
