Did the gay community appear to be annoyed with you for not coming out?
Yes, but I find that the people who think that way are not as connected with their families as
the people who have a more moderate view of how they want to come out. For instance,
there are people who whom it would be ridiculous to pretend that they're not gay. The way
they grew up, their mannerisms --I genuinely believe that for some people, they never had a
choice but to deal with it from a very early age. And it's easy to understand why those people
don't understand the people who aren't that cut-and-dry. I think very often that people who
are plainly gay don't understand when people who are not as plainly gay have other issues to
contend with.
Choices come with problems too?
Yes. But as soon as I fell in love, it was all clear. All the choices that I thought I was weighing
were gone. You can only be proud of your sexuality when it's bringing you joy. Until you love
someone, it's not necessarily bringing you joy. But without love, all of these issues seem kind
of murky.
