GENDER

My theory is that men are not interested in women, don’t want to know them as people, listen to them as separate human beings. Women are afraid to talk, knowing full well the self-absorption of males and fearing to lose their attention if they dare present their own lives as separate and important. Women can be very interesting, talking to each other. They conceal or suppress this with men, because long (maybe millennial) experience has taught them that men are not concerned, don’t want to know, men want to be flattered, soothed, encouraged, helped, and listened to. Not the reverse.

“Horse”

I’ve never seen a soul detached from its gender,
but I’d like to. I’d like to see my own that way,
free of its female tethers. Maybe it would be like
riding a horse. The rider’s the human one,
but everyone looks at the horse.
