I realize now that I am a man from a broken tradition who was convinced by the theatre of a moment that his tradition was unbroken and that he was the heir to it. Working as though from an unbroken tradition, I have made sense of my life by developing an ability to analyze mainstream American cultural artifacts, and this I also urge my fellow-citizens to do.
