MORNING

"Days of Work"

You're up every day in the dark
Stirring dreams into coffee light
Along with the sounds of 5 a.m.
One passing car at a time, the slush
of tires meeting asphalt strangely amplified
in the early-morning silence
expectant and innocent like rice cooking
too young to hear the crash and tinkle
of irretrievable loss.
