There is more to darkness than shadow behavior. Underworld is
dark, chthonic phallos is dark, but not all of underworld is shadow. Chthonic phallos is the
means by which a man moves through ego limitation to ecstatic merger with the
archetypal world in sexuality. It is the numinous source of his being as a
male. it is the silent god within, prompting his creative
action, standing behind his erectile strength, facilitating the explosion of his fertilizing
seed. Chthonic phallos is the hidden source of masculine
power, dark because of hiddenness, capable of catastrophic
rage, but capable also of tender love
and keen attention, based upon instinctual nature and need. What happens in
darkness to a male tells the story of his contact with
divinity, whether that divinity be light or shadow, or a mixture of both. Darkness is chthonic.
Darkness itself is not evil. Darkness is the home of the
spark.
